School District 8 (Kootenay Lake) is nestled in the Southeast corner of British Columbia. We are a vibrant area, covering 6 "families of schools" in the centres of Creston, Crawford Bay, Kaslo/Meadow Creek, Nelson, Salmo, and the Slocan Valley. The schedule for this position is Tuesdays,

Thursdays and Fridays. The awarded applicant will have recent demonstrated successful experience working collaboratively with school staff, is able to work closely with the school team, is knowledgeable, and is able to work appropriately with students with a diverse range of learning challenges. The successful candidate will be experienced in a middle and secondary shop setting, and have the qualifications to teach metalwork, woodwork, and applied skills and design technology through a design thinking and inclusive lens. Safety is a priority, as is assessment for learning (including peer and self-assessment), and inclusion. The awarded applicant will be innovative, creative, inclusive, and demonstrate an understanding of the BC Ed Plan and the District and school Inclusion Plan. They will be a person who is continually striving to improve pedagogy in a changing educational environment.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Education (Elementary or Middle) with a middle/ secondary focus
  • Specialization in Applied Design and Skills Technology
  • Appropriate certifications for teaching in shop/ safety certifications

Teachers applying for this position must possess the following attributes:

  • Willingness to work closely with parents;
  • Capacity to work collaboratively with colleagues;
  • Excellent classroom management skills;
  • Knowledge of current instructional practices and curriculum, including the SD8 Inclusion Model;
  • Knowledge and active use of Shelley Moore framework;
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills;
  • Recent, demonstrated successful experience in a middle or secondary school setting;
  • Excellent organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to be flexible;
  • Familiarity with social-emotional learning and trauma-informed practices;
  • Be proficient in woodwork and metalwork;
  • Have a vision for creating an inclusive, dynamic, and engaging middle school shop program.

The ideal candidate will be expected to:

  • Coordinate and deliver services for diverse learners;
  • Demonstrate ability to use differentiated instruction to meet the learning needs of diverse learners;
  • Implementing inclusion supports and recommendations in the IEP in the classroom
  • Participate in on-going professional development and develop a personal growth plan
  • Work in an atmosphere of collaboration with staff to build consistency and quality of programs
  • Communicate effectively with staff and parents
  • Be familiar with the BC Ed plan, school district board goals and school goals
  • Implement school wide strategies to support the school board’s student expectations, school and class needs
  • Demonstrate knowledge of using technology to support student learning
