Guest House Manager [South Africa]


 

The main purpose of the Manager is to manage the guest houses and thereby create a profound guest experience, in line with the service vision and creative concepts of the guest house.

The Manager will be expected to develop and present the Business Development Plan and Marketing Strategy within 30 days of service or joining the organization.

It is the responsibility of the Manager to monitor hospitality service, maintenance, gardening, and housekeeping standards within the guest houses. The role is additionally strategic in nature, and the manager must drive the appropriate service directives for the guest houses and move the company towards achieving broader goals.

In this capacity, guest expectations regarding the standard of service should be exceeded. In addition, the Guesthouses need to be monitored so that they run in a cost-effective manner, within the agreed budget; in a manner which is conducive to positive inter-personal relationships between staff; and at a superior level of efficiency.

The manager will also be expected to head business development by identifying new opportunities for the guest houses. This will include creating leads in the corporate space and pursuing them to ensure that the guest houses are listed in their databases.

The Manager will be expected to identify new areas and properties ideal for business expansion. The manager will also be expected to manage new building /renovation of existing and new Properties. The Manager will also be expected to Manage monthly rental properties.

The manager is also responsible for ensuring that the morale of the guest house staff is kept at a high level and that staff are developed on an ongoing basis. The manager is expected to oversee the serving of food and oversee the running of a bar to serve drinks.

Finally, the guest house manager must provide a written hand over of responsibilities to the Receptionist in his/her absence and ensure that a full handover is received on his/her return.

Scope of work:

In broad terms the Manager oversees the following key performance areas:

  • The Manager is expected to ensure that the Guesthouses are operating at maximum potential monthly.
  • Drive the broader goals of the company, in terms of all property rentals (long and short terms rentals), by planning and implementing Strategic Management Plans.
  • Management and training of the Guesthouse staff in line with the Sena guest house Standard of Excellence.
  • Ensure ultimate guest relations in the Guesthouses and that the “at home” personal attention levels are maintained.
  • Maintain the highest standards of housekeeping and maintenance and ensure that style and design is not eroded.
  • Effective financial management through the administration of orders and effective stock control.
  • Effective communication and maintenance of guest house relations.
  • Management of the night porters.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 6 year’s work experience – ideally 2 years as a trainee and 4 in a well-

recognized five-star hotel or world class lodge or Guesthouse, as a manager. Interested candidates are to include contactable references in the application.

  • Relevant hospitality management qualification will be a strong advantage but not essential if

experienced in running a guest house.

  • Exceptional Food and Beverage knowledge.
  • Financial management ability.
  • A hardworking, co-operative manner.
  • High standards of service excellence and a passion for the industry.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Exceptional English and a second language would be preferable.
  • Good computer literacy.
  • Excellent management ability and communication skills.
  • A clear understanding of basic labor law and disciplinary procedures.
  • A developmental approach to staff.
  • Assertiveness, patience, and good organizational skills.
  • Understanding of housekeeping and maintenance procedures.
  • An awareness of developments within the food and lodge industries, as well as international trends in hospitality.

From time to time, you may be asked to carry out a task given to you by management, even though they may fall out of your general job description. It is expected that these tasks will be to ensure business growth and or the successful day-to-day operation of Sena Guest Houses and other rental properties.
