Basic Function:

Reporting to the Branch Manager, is responsible for the credit granting functions within the personal, agricultural, commercial and mortgage areas, including interviewing clients, assessing credit worthiness and authorizing loans within limits and/or recommending or declining loans based on established lending granting criteria. Analyzes financial statements, operating cycles, profit levels, cash flow projections and other factors or variables that affect loan viability and risk. Promotes, up-sells and cross-sells the full range of credit union products and services and actively participates in all branch campaigns to promote loan growth. Maintain a high profile and image as the financial institution of choice in the branch trading area by establishing member client and non-member client relationships and business contacts. Conducts a systematic collection procedure and initiates and/or recommends appropriate action to ensure safety of funds and delinquency ratio.

Lending:

  • Develop and maintain a member client base through existing members, cold calls and referrals. Interview members, gather information, identify client needs and determine mutual interest.

  • Analyze member client financial information including financial statements, operating cycles, cash flow, historical performance of the business, profitability and personal net worth and other variables affecting loan viability.

  • Evaluate security, conduct investigation of credit worthiness, calculate the loan to value of security position, ensure that the appropriate documents are prepared.

  • Complete the appropriate loan application and prepare the necessary analysis and paper work including ratio analysis (debt service capacity), create a loan file, ensure documents for searches, registrations, and/or prepare submissions to Central.

  • Review loan file documentation and conditions (if any) with member, have member sign appropriate forms/documentation and advance loan to member account on completion/approval of loan.

  • Grant loan within discretionary lending authority or present loan applications over lending limits to appropriate loan authority for approval.

Lending Administration Function:

  • Conduct annual reviews of loans and lines of credit in accordance to policy.

  • Conduct normal follow up on delinquent accounts, review delinquency reports and analyze loan status, recommend and/or implement delinquency action to mitigate losses including work outs or legal action if necessary.

  • Acquire and review monthly operational reports from member client businesses.

  • Audit loan files for appropriate registrations, proper execution of documents and verify that all conditions have been met.

  • May review the overdraft daily and recommend appropriate action within credit union policy.

  • Understand and incorporate branch operating procedures, lending policies and security requirements and ensure that guidelines are adhered to.

Sales and Service Functions:

  • Identify new business opportunities in the community and/or trading area by personal contact, cold calling and/or referrals and investigate and evaluate opportunities for new business members.

  • Represent the credit union in the community by participating in local business activities and community functions that will enhance the image of the organization in the trading area and promote the philosophy and principles of the co-operative movement.

  • Identify opportunities to promote, up sell and cross sell the full range of Credit Union products.

  • Exhibit a high commitment to member relationships by promoting the concept of relationship marketing. Develop an affiliation with members by knowing individual members and their business relationship with the credit union.

  • Enthusiastically take part in campaigns, specific marketing initiates and /or promotions for new products and services that promote sales and growth.

  • Contribute to the growth and development of the lending portfolio and identity opportunities to improve performance by analyzing member needs, business trends and competitor offerings.

  • Through personal example, portray a good sense of teamwork and establish working relationships with other staff members by displaying a willingness to assist others and contribute to team goals.

  • Other duties as necessary under direction of your branch manager/immediate supervisor. These duties include, but are not limited to loan clerking duties and other levels of lending, particularly where a branch does not have availability of these lender/clerk positions.

Skill Knowledge Base:

  • Credit union computer system; credit union philosophies and principles; credit union lending policies and procedures; corporate and Branch objectives and goals; deposits and service products.

  • Service and selling; verbal and written business communications; goal setting, budgeting and forecasting; financial analysis; computers skills, information systems and spreadsheets; decision making; time management and personal organization; marketing strategies and implementation.

Educational Requirements:

  • Preference will be given to those with Post secondary education, Graduates of CUIC Management Studies Program and candidates with a proven track record in credit union/financial institution environment.

Experience:

  • Four to five years as a personal lender or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Minimum 30% of your portfolio is Agricultural and/or Commercial Credit.
